Most of the trips on this site, while focused on outdoor spaces, are centered around the "frontcountry". For some travelers, this isn't the way they want to see the National Parks. You may be wondering what the Grand Tetons look like from the other side, or just how many stars you can see from the bottom of the Grand Canyon. We can certainly relate.
Backcountry trips have a lot of unique elements that make it hard for us to present a menu of itineraries. Any group of travelers is going to have their own preferences on difficulty, number of nights, etc. Some may also want to plan a backcountry portion as only one element of a longer trip (that's something we often do ourselves).
If this sounds like you, reach out to us and let's talk. We can help you pick out the right trails (or lakes or rivers) for your trip, establish the planning timeline, navigate the permitting process, and determine what other activities you want to do before or after your multi-day wilderness experience.
This service is available for small and large groups, as we also have experience planning wilderness trips for Scout groups.
There are over 600 miles of trail in the Great Smoky Mountains, including 71 miles of Appalachian Trail. This dense network, along with over 100 reservable backcountry sites, makes it possible to plan trips for a weekend or a full week or more.
The Teton Crest Trail runs from north-south through the wilderness half of the national park (and a bit through the adjacent National Forest). There are enough different access points to give a range of length options, although permitting requires careful planning.
There are only a handful of trails through the swamp because the trails follow the natural waterways. If you wish to stay overnight, you'll load up your canoe and camp on raised wooden platforms. Loop trips are possible, as are traverses that make use of a shuttle afterward.

These are just examples, but the list of wilderness areas is endless. If you have a dream location in mind we'll work with you to find the best options. If you just want to get away from it all for a few days we can start from there.
Many mountain trails are only open for a few months in the warmer times of the year. Different parks and different trails will have varying specific requirements, and we'll sort through those with you. Trails in desert parks may be ideal in winter. We can start with a destination and find the right season, or start with a preferred season and find you the right destination.
Most backcountry sites on federal lands require reservations made on recreation.gov. Typically permits for a season become available on a particular date and fill up quickly. Often, walk-up permits are available on a limited basis for people with more flexible plans. The fact is that many popular trails have more demand than supply. But we'll provide the best information we can to secure a trip that meets your needs.
We will find you lodging for the nights before and after your backcountry days. We typically book 3-star hotels for our clients, but can find alternatives as needed.
Flying with camping supplies has its own challenges, but nothing we haven't done, and that can't be overcome with planning and some strategic luggage packing. We can advise on current TSA policies and help make a plan.
Depending on your other trip logistics, you may prefer to take a shuttle directly from the airport to your trailhead instead of renting a car. Alternatively, a shuttle may be necessary to transport you from one trailhead to the other, facilitating a point-to-point hike. We can find a local vendor to meet whatever shuttle needs you have.
Usually, wilderness permits are not very expensive, often as little as $10-$20/campsite/night. The expensive parts of these sorts of trips tend to be the gear, which Wandersaurus does not provide, and the airfare (if needed) to get there, which Wandersaurus does not book for you. We can work with you on planning other pieces of your trip, which will work the same way as other custom trips. For planning the wilderness overnights, we will charge a flat rate of $100 for the first night, and $50 for each additional night.
While some details of this trip were not designed with larger groups in mind, the itinerary has been done with groups of college students, and could be done with other age groups as well. Contact us to discuss!
